Couple Therapy for Depression (CTfD): Restoring Harmony and Healing Relationships

Couple Therapy for Depression (CTfD) is one of the evidence-based, integrative, high-intensity therapies offered with NHS Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) services.

It is a behavioural-based couple therapy designed to improve communication, change distressing behaviours, reduce conflicts and change unhelpful assumptions and perceptions.

The model follows National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines and competencies that have been identified for the treatment of depression in couples where there is also relationship distress.

How does it work?

  • Reduces damaging interactions between couples by revising perceptions of the relationship, exploring unhelpful interpretations and assumptions
  • Builds emotional openness and closeness to promote understanding and acceptance by improving communication and consciously changing behaviours
  • Explores and helps manage feelings that can lead to emotional over-regulation / under-regulation
  • Develops problem solving skills to help the couple cope with the ordinary and not-so ordinary stresses that arise in everyday relating
